Sri Lanka

The island known as the pearl of the Indian Ocean is home to many varieties of gems. 52 of the 85 known varieties of gems are found in this tiny island. Sri Lanka’s gem industry has a rich history. Due to the abundance of natural gems Sri Lanka was also called Ratna-Dweepa (Gem Island). Marco Polo once wrote that the island had the best sapphires, topazes, amethysts, and other gems in the world. Serendib was the ancient name given to the island by Middle–eastern and Persian traders that crossed the Indian Ocean to collect and trade Sri Lankan gems during the fourth and fifth century. Sri Lankan gems are marketed and sold all over the world.
Gems are only found in certain parts of the island.

*Ratnapura (City of Gems/City of Rubies): The area surrounding the city of Ratnapura is the oldest known source in Sri Lanka. Most of Sri Lankan gems are found in the surrounding area.

*Elehara: Many large specimens of gems have been found in this area. Sapphires are among the stones that have been found here

*Okkampitiay: Gems have been found in this city which is located in the dry climate zone of Sri Lanka

*Kataragama: The area surrounding kataragama has produce a reasonable number of gems.

Mining in Sri Lanka is mainly done close to present river systems and in areas where ancient rivers once flowed. Gem mining remains a highly profitable industry and wisdom that has been passed down from generation to generation.
Once a location is identified miners start digging a pit. Gems are typically found with the Illam (gem gravel). The depth level where Illam is found varies from 2m to as much as 45 meters at some locations. Pits are normally worked by 6-16 workers (the numbers may increase depending on the size of the project). Water can hinder the process of digging and collecting Illam. Water is pumped out of the mine using fuel operated pumps. After the pit is dug and the Illam is found it is collected in baskets and taken to a washing area to identify the precious stones which are scattered among the Illam.
